Allison and Caleb’s engagement photos at the Jefferson Memorial and National Cathedral felt chic, sophisticated, and flirty — just as all good engagement sessions in the city should! We met at sunrise at the Jefferson Memorial, where the soft morning light filtered through Allison’s floor-length gown and bounced off the memorial’s marble columns. Caleb’s classic blue suit complemented Allison’s look perfectly. Together, the pair laughed, danced, and twirled against one of Washington DC’s most iconic backdrops.
As the sun rose higher in the sky, we headed to the National Cathedral for the second half of their session. Allison changed into a pretty white summer dress, and Caleb donned a light linen shirt and pants. As we entered the Bishop’s Garden, the mood shifted, becoming softer, more romantic. We wandered through the National Cathedral’s quiet grounds, pausing for stolen moments beneath stone archways and along winding garden paths.
As a Washington DC wedding photographer, I love finding ways to incorporate different sides of a city into an engagement session. The Jefferson Memorial and National Cathedral are two of my favorite places for photos in DC. They made the perfect pairing for Allison and Caleb, giving us everything from polished sunrise portraits to softer, more romantic moments tucked amongst the roses and beneath soaring arches.
National Cathedral Engagement Photos FAQ
Do you need a permit for engagement photos at the National Cathedral?
Yes, the National Cathedral requires a photography permit for professional engagement sessions. Since a permit is required, it is important to arrange your session in advance. The current permit covers the Cathedral’s exterior, permitted grounds, and Bishop’s Garden.
What time of day is best for National Cathedral engagement photos?
Engagement photos can be taken throughout the day, but I personally prefer sunrise. The Cathedral grounds are typically quietest in the morning. With less people around, it is easier to enjoy the gardens and architecture.
Can you take engagement photos inside the National Cathedral?
The standard photography permit does not include the interior of the Cathedral. For engagement sessions, I typically photograph couples in the Bishop’s Garden and around the Cathedral’s exterior, including its beautiful covered archways and stonework. The soaring arches and grand architecture create a completely different look from the softer garden paths.

Your National Cathedral Engagement Photos
The National Cathedral is one of my favorite places for engagement photos in Washington DC. The Bishop’s Garden winds around the Cathedral with lush greenery, winding pathways, and beautiful stone archways, creating a romantic setting that feels like a hidden escape from the city, while the soaring arches and intricate stonework of the Cathedral, itself, provide a unique backdrop for more architectural portraits.
Pair the National Cathedral with the Jefferson Memorial, and you get two completely different looks in one session — iconic DC portraits at the Memorial followed by softer, garden-inspired photographs at the Cathedral.
