A Surprise Proposal at the Capitol Building in Washington DC

Tim pulled off the most spectacular National Mall proposal on Capitol Hill, and I’m still pinching myself that I got to be their DC proposal photographer! Not only did he come up with an elaborate ruse to fly Gabby from Charlotte, NC to Washington DC for the weekend, but after dropping down to one knee in front of the iconic Capitol Building on the National Mall, he then whisked her away to the Willard InterContinental Hotel (the spot where they first met!). There, she was greeted by the best surprise yet: the smiling, cheering faces of both their families. As a DC wedding photographer, proposals are always some of my favorite moments to capture — the emotion, the surprise, and the joy are unmatched, every single time.

Photographing a Surprise Proposal at the US Capitol

The US Capitol is one of the most iconic places in Washington DC to plan a surprise proposal. With its grand architecture and beautiful views of the Capitol grounds, it creates a setting that feels unmistakably DC while still keeping the focus on the moment itself.

After the proposal, we took some time to capture portraits around the Capitol before continuing on to the Willard for more photographs. The combination of two such classic Washington DC locations made the afternoon feel especially fitting for a celebration in the city.
