Katie and Ricky meticulously planned their wedding at the Houdini Estate around their friends and family to create a truly memorable wedding day experience! From the interactive white glove champagne wall greeting guests as they arrived, to their stunning floral-laden ceremony space, to the 16-foot charcuterie grazing spread, magician, and dazzling myriad of signature cocktails available during cocktail hour, to the incredible fire dance, Korean fan dance, and Korean drum performances that entertained guests during the reception, Katie and Ricky’s Houdini Estate wedding was what can only be described as pure magic! As the night came to a close, guests were whisked away to an after-party on the rooftop of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel where they ate more, drank more, and silent-disco danced the night away.
About the Houdini Estate
Tucked away in Laurel Canyon, the Houdini Estate feels worlds away from the rest of Los Angeles. The five-acre property is filled with gardens, century-old trees, winding paths, terraces, water features, and unexpected pieces of art, creating a wedding venue that feels more like a private world to explore than a traditional event space. The estate itself includes nine outdoor terraced levels that can be used for ceremonies, meals, entertainment, and other parts of the celebration.
The property also has a fascinating connection to its namesake. Built in the early 1900s, the estate retains caves, hidden passageways, terraced gardens, and a deep-water tank where Harry Houdini reportedly practiced his underwater escapes. Houdini used the property’s pool to practice his feats of escape and illusion, and his wife, Bess, later lived at the estate for ten years.
The estate’s rich history is part of what makes the Houdini Estate so different from other Los Angeles wedding venues. There is something new to discover around nearly every corner, whether you’re wandering through the gardens, exploring one of the property’s many paths, or finding an unexpected backdrop for portraits.
Houdini Estate Wedding Ceremonies
The Houdini Estate offers several unique ceremony locations, each with its own distinct setting and atmosphere. Couples can exchange vows beside the Waterfall and Gazebo, along the Mosaic Driveway and Terrace, in the Formal and Terraced Gardens, or near the Grotto. Each setting has its own atmosphere, from the lush gardens and canyon views to the property’s historic stonework and distinctive mosaic details.
Katie and Ricky chose the Mosaic Driveway for their ceremony, using the beautifully patterned stone and mosaic terrace as a dramatic aisle and ceremony backdrop. Surrounded by the gardens and architecture of the estate, it was an unforgettable setting for their vows and the perfect introduction to the celebration that followed.
Cocktail Hour at the Houdini Estate
After the ceremony, guests moved into the Formal and Terraced Gardens for cocktail hour. Tucked throughout the property, these garden spaces offer a more intimate setting surrounded by lush greenery, historic stonework, and the natural landscape of Laurel Canyon.
Katie and Ricky filled the gardens with an incredible spread of food and drinks, including a 16-foot charcuterie display and a selection of signature cocktails. A magician entertained guests during cocktail hour, adding another unexpected element to a wedding day that was designed around creating an experience for everyone there.
Using a different part of the estate for cocktail hour also gave the day a natural sense of movement. Guests weren’t simply moving from a ceremony space into a reception room; they were exploring another part of the property before continuing to the evening’s main celebration.
A champagne wall greeted guests as they arrived at the Houdini Estate. The sign on the wall read: “ring bell for service.” When guests rang the bell, white-gloved hands popped out of the hedge offering flutes of champagne!
Houdini Estate Wedding Receptions
Katie and Ricky held their reception on the Grand Lawn, creating an open-air celebration beneath the stars. After spending the afternoon moving through the gardens and terraces of the estate, guests gathered outdoors for dinner, dancing, and an incredible evening of entertainment.
The open-air setting was especially fitting for their wedding. Rather than transforming an indoor ballroom, the reception allowed the natural beauty of the estate and the night sky to become part of the celebration itself.
And Katie and Ricky certainly didn’t settle for an ordinary reception. Their evening included two fire dancers, a Korean fan dance, and Korean drum performances, creating an incredible lineup of entertainment for their guests. Every element added another layer to a wedding that felt more like an immersive experience than a traditional reception.
