My parents have been Ath members for nearly fifty years, so some of my earliest memories include Wednesday evenings at the Athenaeum’s legendary Prime Rib Buffet, Rath al Fresco dinners in the Pavilion Garden, and wandering the courtyards long before I ever picked up a camera. Years later, when I photographed one of my first weddings there, it felt like coming home.
More than a decade (and over 250 weddings) later, the Athenaeum is still one of my favorite wedding venues of all time. The Library is a favorite getting-ready location for grooms, with rich wood paneling, painted barrel vault ceilings, and architectural details that give the space a classic, sophisticated feel.

The columns are one of the venue’s most recognizable architectural features and one of my favorite places for portraits throughout the wedding day. Their classic design creates a strong sense of symmetry and movement while showcasing the Mediterranean architecture that makes the Athenaeum so unique.
I love using this area for portraits and wedding party photos alike because the combination of the columns, surrounding greenery, and California light creates images that feel both timeless and editorial.
The Olive Tree-Lined Walkways
The olive tree-lined pathways are, without question, one of my favorite places to take pictures at the Athenaeum. The light here is truly unlike anywhere else. As the sun filters through the trees, it creates a warm, dreamy glow that makes even the simplest moments feel magical.

The History & Architecture of the Caltech Athenaeum
Built in 1930, the Athenaeum was inspired by the famous Athenaeum of London and envisioned by astronomer George Ellery Hale as a gathering place for scholars, scientists, artists, and intellectuals. Designed by architect Gordon B. Kaufmann with landscaping by Florence Yoch and Lucile Council, the Athenaeum blends Mediterranean architecture with thoughtfully designed grounds that have remained one of Pasadena’s most recognizable landmarks.
Throughout its history, the Athenaeum has welcomed some of the world’s most influential thinkers, including Albert Einstein and other Nobel Prize winners.
