There are many beautiful historic wedding venues throughout Washington, DC, but DAR is one that truly captures the character of the City. From the moment guests arrive, the architecture, location, and views create an experience that feels deeply connected to DC while still providing couples with the flexibility to create a celebration that’s all their own.
One of my favorite things about photographing weddings at DAR is how much variety the venue offers without requiring couples to leave the property. The day can unfold through a number of different spaces — from portraits overlooking the Washington Monument, to cocktail hour on the Portico or inside the Library, to dinner and dancing surrounded by the Rotunda’s historic columns.
DAR is also one of my favorite venues for unpredictable DC weather. I’ve photographed beautiful fall weddings with sunny skies and portraits outside, as well as summer celebrations where storms moved the ceremony indoors to the O’Byrne Gallery. Having equally beautiful indoor and outdoor options means couples never have to worry that a change in weather will take away from their wedding day experience.

The Portico
The Portico is one of DAR’s most iconic spaces, offering a beautiful backdrop for portraits, ceremonies, cocktail hour, and dancing alike. Ceremonies are often held on the Portico overlooking the Washington Monument, creating a classic DC backdrop for one of the most meaningful moments of the day. Guests can then gather beneath the Rotunda and along the terrace for cocktail hour, enjoying drinks and conversation with views of the city before the evening continues. Later in the night, the space becomes a beautiful setting for dancing beneath the historic columns.
With the Washington Monument in the distance and the Rotunda’s marble columns surrounding the space, DAR’s Portico captures so much of what makes this Washington DC venue feel so unique.
The Grand Staircase
The marble staircase is one of DAR’s signature features and a beautiful location for portraits throughout the day. From a bride walking down the stairs before the ceremony to newlyweds taking a quiet moment together, the architecture creates a natural sense of elegance and movement.
The Balcony
The balcony at DAR is one of my favorite hidden gems for portraits. Overlooking the historic interiors with beautiful architectural details behind you, it creates a setting that feels both elegant and intimate.
I especially love photographing couples here around sunset, when the warm evening light fills the space and creates some of the most beautiful portraits of the day. It’s a quiet moment away from the celebration while still capturing the history and character that makes DAR such a special venue.
The O’Byrne Gallery
The O’Byrne Gallery is one of the spaces that makes DAR such a wonderful year-round wedding venue. With its ornate ceilings, white walls, and neoclassical architecture, it provides a stunning setting for ceremonies and receptions, especially when weather changes outdoor plans.
Brittney and Jeff’s summer DAR wedding is a perfect example of how beautifully this space transforms. When a summer storm moved through on their wedding day, their ceremony was moved inside to the O’Byrne Gallery, creating a celebration that still felt every bit as special.
The Library
The Library is one of DAR’s most recognizable spaces, with rich wood paneling, historic details, and a completely different atmosphere from the venue’s marble-filled spaces. It offers a unique setting for cocktail hour, portraits, and quiet moments throughout the wedding day.
I love that couples have the option to host cocktail hour in different areas of DAR depending on their vision and the season. I’ve photographed celebrations with guests enjoying drinks on the Portico overlooking the Washington Monument, as well as weddings where the Library was transformed into an intimate gathering space filled with conversation and candlelight.
With its historic character and warm interior, the Library adds another layer to the DAR experience and gives couples a way to incorporate the venue’s history into their wedding day.
